Jacobian: Growth through acquisition

  • From the Specialist in Structured Reporting to a Global Provider of AI-Supported Diagnostics with Support from Bayern Kapital

From a Munich-based specialist in structured medical reporting, an internationally positioned platform for AI-supported diagnostics emerged within a few years. A decisive milestone on this path was the acquisition of Fluency for Imaging, made possible through growth capital from Bayern Kapital.

    The Starting Point: Smart Reporting

Founded in 2014 by Prof. Dr. Wieland Sommer, the company developed software for structured and AI-supported medical reporting. It assists physicians in creating reports more efficiently and consistently. At the same time, clinical data is made usable for research, quality management, and further AI applications. The technological foundation for the company’s further development had thus been established. However, to make the leap to a new magnitude, the company required more than just organic growth: a stronger international market presence and access to a wider customer base.

  • Reaching a New Level Through Growth Capital and a Strategic Acquisition

This opportunity for international scaling arose with the acquisition of Fluency for Imaging. The established platform for radiological reporting and workflow management was already in use at approximately 200 hospitals and radiology chains in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and the U.K., and held a strong market position. For Smart Reporting, this presented the opportunity to gain international customer relationships, additional technological expertise, and a significantly broader reach all at once.

For Bayern Kapital, it was precisely this strategic outlook that was a key component of its investment thesis. With the financing rounds in 2024 and 2025, Bayern Kapital not only supported the company’s continued growth but also laid the financial foundation for the subsequent acquisition of Fluency for Imaging.

“From the very beginning, we were impressed by the vision the team had for the company’s future. It wasn’t just about further developing a successful software company, but about seizing the opportunity to build an internationally relevant provider through the acquisition of Fluency for Imaging. Such ambitious steps require the right partner and the appropriate capital.”

    The Result: Jacobian

The acquisition of Fluency for Imaging at the end of 2025 marked the beginning of a new chapter. Under the Jacobian brand, the teams combined Fluency for Imaging’s international market presence and workflow expertise with Smart Reporting’s technologies for structured and AI-assisted reporting. In doing so, they laid the foundation for the company’s next phase.

The results are evident today: approximately 150 employees, more than 250 customers, and over 10,000 radiologists use the platform. What began as a Munich-based specialist in structured reporting has evolved into a globally positioned company that brings together clinical knowledge, established workflows, and AI on a single platform.

For Bayern Kapital, Jacobian is an example of how ambitious technology companies can significantly accelerate their growth with the right capital and a clear strategy. The financing of the Fluency for Imaging acquisition paved the way for international scaling and the creation of a platform with global reach.
